And how are you???

It's late and I should be in bed...but after the nastiness that floated around today I needed a moment...

Oh my...

Boo has had the same cold for over a month. She will go three or four days just fine, then it will hit again. Ears, nose and cough. We have made two trips to the doctor to make sure there wasn't an ear infection, and there wasn't. Just pressure from all the coughing and nose nastiness going on. Poor thing has some major pain going on. Going down big hills...not fun when there is ear pressure. My poor baby.

Hunter is one of those kids that doesn't get sick, maybe once a year. He had a nasty stomach thing this fall, so we thought we were past it for the year. No such luck. He informed me yesterday that he has had a cold for a while, almost two weeks (about the time he went home last...I blame Boo...). He has been around people with colds and eye goopies, but no pink eye. What does he now have...at my house...PINK EYE!! After a call to the clinic, meds were on the way.

Now Boo has had conjunctivitis many MANY times. She is a magnet for it (yes I know I she will get it this time), but she has never had the neon glow in the dark bright red eyes that go along with it. But oh how Hunter's eye glows. The poor guy. We had some over the counter drops that helped with the itching, but he has the reddest eye ever! I feel so bad for him. But, the meds will kick in quick, and that will help a ton.

Now, tomorrow will be a day of hot water washing all Hunter's sheets and clothes, bleaching doorknobs and handles. And, I just remembered he put away the dishes this morning...crap...

Yummmmm...

This past Christmas my Dad gave all us kids a quarter cow...the meat that is. And then, we all chipped in for a quarter pig as well. You have no idea how excited I am. We grill all summer, at least 4 nights a week, and meat cost us a lot last year. So not only is there ground hamburger, there are multiple kinds of steaks and roasts. I have fresh bacon (wipe drool) and ham. Our extra freezer is 95% meat and 5% other stuff.

But with all this meat, there comes a dilemma...how do I use it all! We know we will do some of the roasts at the cabin this summer (love walk away food) and the bacon will be saved for a special occasion, but there is so much more you can do!

Anyone have a great recipe for a rub or marinade, anything at all? We are open to new things!

For my Brooke

My friend Brooke tagged me in a weird things meme...and I am not sure why she thinks I am the weird one in this friendship...oh wait. Now I remember. But I just did my 100 things...incomplete that it is, and don't know what to say!

Anyway, here we go.

1) I changed my name when I was 5. Yes, 5. There were 9 Kelly's total between my school class, dance class and other friends. I was sick of being Kelly. So, I added a letter after seeing the leader on Mickey Mousercise, whose name was Kellyn. I told my mom I was changing my name, and she said fine. From that day on only three people called me Kelly, and two were my grandparents.

2) I have been in 9 car accidents since I was 16, the first two weeks after I got my licence. The last, last winter. My sister's friends till call me crash sometimes...I must add that only two were my fault! All the rest were other people not paying attention.

3) I MUST have music at all times. I always have music going at work and in the car. If the TV is not going, the radio is instead. If I don't have music playing, it does play in my head. Does that make me weird or just crazy? Not sure.

4) I grew up across the street from a great city park. There was a "big kid
park, "baby" park, big jumps, sledding hill, swings and basketball hoops. In front of the park was a library, my home away from home. Every day during the summer my brother and I would leave and spend the day in the park/library. We would climb trees, swing, do jumps on our bikes and read. I was heaven on earth.

5) The first time I ever rode on a snowmobile, I was 15. My best friend had moved away, and I was visiting her over Christmas break. We were going through a loop her brother had built in the back yard, and I crashed into her Dad's fishing boat. It took me almost 10 years to ride one again. I still won't drive by myself.

The music

Do you ever wonder what songs have left a meaning in your life? What music did you listen to at a certain time? What memories come to light when you hear a song?

When I hear certain songs, waves of emotions come flying back.

When I hear "Centerfield" by John Fogerty it brings me back to playing softball as a kid. I remember getting my first strike out, being with my Dad and spending the time with friends. I remember the broken nose, the broken thumb and getting hit in the gut by a line drive. I remember my first medal, trophy and all the good times that came along with it.

When I hear Regulate, I always always think of Big Sis. To this day we can sing all the words, from start to finish. The same with "Sisters" from White Christmas. My sister is my best friend, and those songs bring her to the front of my mind.

When I hear "You Were Meant for Me" by Jewell always brings me back to my high school. It was an Arts school, and we would sit in the common area (The Pit) and sing this with Alan on the guitar. Those are the memories from school that I take with me.

Most importantly, when I hear "Look At You Girl" by Chris LeDoux, I think of my husband. We danced to this song so many times when we were dating, and at our wedding. I also think of our friend Bob, who passed last year. He loved Chris LeDoux, and drove all over the country to see him in concert.

There are so many other songs and meanings. Some songs just make that impact.

WFMW - Backwards Edition

My question this week is simple...How in the world do you get Crayon and marker off the wall! I have done soap and water, magic eraser and even some Lysol all purpose cleaner. Boo decided a couple weeks ago that it would be fun to write her name all over the wall under her top bunk, thinking I wouldn't see it. Think again young lady! Now, I can't get it off! HELP!!

Frank the Tank

Our local radio station has a call-in type program every morning. They pose different questions/scenarios everyday. They have done favorite toy growing up, spousal nicknames, and horror stories about your kids. I always have a comment, but don't call in. Today though, I really wanted too.

This morning they were talking about first cars. Whether you bought it your self or your parents got it for you. Oh the stories of my first car!

My Junior year in high school I transferred to a new school (by choice). The school was about 20 minutes away with no traffic, 45 in rush hour. In order to get there my parents got me a car. Now, this was 1996. There were some great cars then, the Grand Prix was huge then. Is that what I got?

Nope.

I got a 1977 Pontiac Bonneville, or Frank the Tank we called him. He was mint green, not lime green, mint green. Two doors, and a HUGE car. I LOVED this car. It was a monster. Everyone knew my car, and loved it. I could fit 7 people in it comfortably. It was fabulous! Just think of the trouble you can into with a car that huge...

This car lasted just under a year.

I crashed him.

Badly.

A moment for Frank the Tank...

One day I was driving to my friend Andy's house, going down 494. There is a scary cloverleaf over 35W. I was checking my blind spot, and CRASH! I hit the car in front of me. Then CRASH the car behind me hit me. I bounced between them a couple times before coming to a stop. I ended up spending the afternoon in the hospital, and finding out that I am prone to blood pressure dropping in stressful situations (good info to have don't you think?).

Frank was done that day, and we mourned him...sort of. I was drugged out to prevent whiplash so I don't remember much, but he gone. All I remember is getting a frantic phone call from Andy, flowers and lots and lots and sleep.

Oh, and I still hold my breathe going over that bridge...12 years later.

Scrap-bribing

I read Iowa Geek daily, she is one of my favorites (it helps that she lived in MN for a time). Her stories and ideas make me think, laugh and grumble all at the same time.

Once a month she holds a scrap-bribe on her blog. I have been entering for about three months, and in February I won! Oh the goodies that came in my box from Iowa!

First, let us take a moment to look at the Janine King Market tote! How fabulous is this!

See that note pad at the bottom? She made that herself! I am bringing it to work so maybe there won't be post-its all over my desk.



There are paints, stencils and rub-ons. I love love LOVE rub-ons! Plus there is some ribbon, and I am starting to work with ribbon more.

Picture time...

An Iowa Mom gave her 7 year old the camera and told him to go nuts. I figured I would give Boo the camera and let her have some fun while I did laundry.

First, let us remember Hubby's last birthday...

And of course we have to have the HSM poster...what picture taking would be complete if there wasn't a HSM poster...

We don't have much decorating sence when it comes to the kids rooms. Do what they want, and as long as they keep it clean who cares!

And then was have Zac...of course we have Zac...

Oh, and there was one of Hubby sleeping, but I just couldn't do that to him. Poor guy didn't get much sleep today.

Leap Year Facts I didn't know

Tomorrow is February 29th, Leap "Day". I have a friend (and her twin) who have a birthday tomorrow. They are turning 7 (28). I give her a hard time that her daughter will hit 8 before she does, and you can bet I will tell her daughter that as well! (Love you hun!! MUAH!)

But, I have never understood WHY we have a leap year. I know it is every 4 years, and that it adds a date to the year...but why? So, Google and I became buddies and I dug in. There are some strange theories out there, but lets go with some known things shall we?

• Every year that is divisible by 4 is a leap year: 2008/4 = 502 (2007/4 =501.75).
• A year that is equally divided by 100 is not a leap year unless it can also be equally divided by 400 i.e. 2000 was a leap year.
• The earth rotates around the sun, as we all learned as kids. The vernal equinoxes is when the sun is directly above the earth's equator. The time between two vernal equinoxes is called a tropical year or solar year. A Tropical year is 365.2422 days long. When we use the calendar with 365 days, we lose .2422 days, or about 6 hours a year. If we didn't have a leap year, after 100 years we would be 24 days ahead.
• There can be a gap between leap years of 8 years. The last time this happened was 1896-1904. It will happen again between 2096-2104.
• Leap day is also called St. Oswald's Day. He was a 10th century archbishop of York who passed on February 29, 992.
• Many famous people have Leap Year Birthdays: Pope Paul III (1549), Antonio Sabato Jr (actor), Lyndon Byers (hockey player), Ja Rule (rapper and actor) and Chris Conley (musician).
• Important Events that happened on Leap Day: The Salem Witch trials began, Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Oscar for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind, the first Walk/Don't Walk signs were installed in 1952
• There are only 187,000 people in the USA that have Leap Year birthdays. Less than 3 million world wide.

So there you have it, some confusing and fun facts about Leap Year!

Everytime I see this commercial, I have to laugh. When I was 19 I danced to Thriller, and it was AMAZING!! We even had someone in the red jacket. It was great.

But this, this is just plain funny. The lizards make me laugh...

Scrap-Bribing - February Edition

C-A-N-D-Y

My kids love games! Absolutely love them. Hubby and I are major fans, but the kids would play morning noon and night. It is great that they are open to many new games, and love playing card games as well (more on that at a later time).

However, we got Boo a game that I love. It is a learning game, and can be used until she is much older. I am sure that Hunter will love the older side as well.

Boo got Scrabble Jr. for a belated birthday present. It was on sale at Target, and I couldn't resist. She walks around spelling all the time, even sounding out the words as she goes. I figured this would be a great game for her to learn even more words, and expand her vocabulary.

The instructions are easy to understand, the pieces easy to handle and the fun factor is huge! We laugh and tease each other non-stop when we are playing this game, and that is not always an easy thing to do.

There are two levels to this game. One side of the board has words on it, and you have to spell out the words with your chips. To get the point for the word you must be the one to place the last needed letter. You must spell the word in order, and can not skip letters. There are words that start with a middle letter, and you can start those words even though they are in the middle, that can be somewhat confusing for little ones, but easily explained. You win if you have the most point tokens when all the letters are on the board. Boo has beat me every time we play.

The second side of the board is a plain board with no words pre-printed on it. It is perfect for kids Hunter's age, and could work for Boo's age as well. You get a point for every letter you put down, and the person with the most points wins. Simple, like regular Scrabble.

Now this is one learning game that I can honestly say works great for my kids. Boo is already learning some of the words, from the pictures and the spelling out. It is great that are still games out there that will teach them something and be fun at the same time.

Excuse me please...

I have a small bone to pick with Mother Nature...nothing huge. Simple really.

Where is our SNOW!!!

Iowa is getting nailed left and right, same with Wisconsin. Even New York, Illinois and Kentucky for pete's sake. What about us in Minnesota? I want a snow day! I want to spend the day drinking hot chocolate, playing games, making snow men and letting the rules slide away. I want a day where Boo, Hunter, Hubby and I can snuggle under the blanket and watch Transformers on the couch. I would love to have a day where the timetables don't matter, and we can wear pj's all day if we want to.

Where is our snow day?

Last year we only had one snow day, and that was in February. We didn't get a real good snow fall at all until then. We have had a couple good snow falls, but in Minnesota it takes at least 8 inches in the city for a snow day. It is a vicious cycle that makes snow days happen. The outer city schools close first. It doesn't take much wind to make white out conditions in areas without many buildings. Then it is the charter schools. They close to make the buses available for the regular school districts. Then it moves to the semi-metro schools. These ones don't close unless ALL the outer schools close, and at least one other semi-metro school closes. No one wants to be first! Lastly are the two main school districts in Minnesota. If these two close, you KNOW there is a major snow day on the way. When they close it makes phone calls happen..."Did you see Minneapolis closed? I am watching the weather to see what is happening". They hardly EVER close, to many kids...

We are in the semi-metro area, so we hardly ever close. Sure, afternoon activities may be canceled, or late start, but no out-right cancellation.

I want a snow day!! Just one...is that to much to ask?

New Arrival!!!

We had a new arrival in our little group of friends. Max graced us with his "squeaks" last night at about 11:30. He is doing fabulous, along with Mom and Dad.
Max has been a long bed rest coming, and we are so excited he is finally here!

Welcome Max!! We can't wait to watch you grow!

Happy Birthday!!

As the birthday excitement is finally wearing down, and the kids are starting to get back to normal, I figured it was time to share some fun stuff from this past weekend.

My mom and I made the cakes this year. Normally the kids do it, but since it was Hunter's golden birthday I wanted to do it. Boo was upset, but she got over it when she saw her cake. Now, keep in mind that I am not the world's greatest baker, I leave that to my sister. But, I can make a cake from a box, and make it look somewhat pretty.

With that said, I did set my sights somewhat high this year.

Hunter loves football...well any sport really. But, football was the easiest one to transpose into a cake, since the Super Bowl was just the week before. He got a fabulous football field with goalposts and everything. We used Rolo's for the goal-posts and licorice for the up-rights (look honey I used the right words!! Woohoo!!) It was the red guys against the yellow guys, with HUGS for refs. In the slap happy end of this cake, I made the red gummy bear lay down, faking a quarterback injury...(cough cough... Daunte...cough cough). And when I stood him up he had a green bottom (click the picture to see), so it reminded me of a another quarterback in the Super Bowl (cough cough...Brady...cough cough). I giggled on that one for a while. The cake turned out really good, and Hunter was a little impressed...just a little though.

Boo's cake on the other hand was a fun one, just a little harder.

Boo loves loves LOVES Legos. She got a great house set for Christmas, and another set from my mom for her birthday. She would build all night long, and never stop if we didn't make her. Hunter...not a fan. Boo now has all his Legos since he NEVER played with them. Not a big deal, since she is so happy with them.

So, for her birthday I found directions to make Lego Block cakes. I was so excited I did a little dance. All it took was a 9x13 cake cut into 4 segments. The tricky part is frosting the cut parts, not an easy task. But, we muddled through. For the connecter parts we used marshmallows cut in half. You frost them while they are on a toothpick and then place them. It turned out GREAT! Boo did a little squeal (which is always a good sign) and was very excited.

Both cakes turned out great for the birthdays, and I even got some compliments (which is always nice when you have failed in cakes before).

Gloves in a Bottle - Review

One of the many great things about blogging is the opportunity to review products for companies. I haven't earned many chances yet, but am so grateful for this one.

I was asked to review Gloves in a Bottle. It is a lotion that is supposed to protect your skin from the harsh things in the world, whether that be weather, water or chemicals. It bonds with your skin to create a barrier for your skin, one that will not come off when you wash your hands. It is a thin lotion, with no odor. There is no residue, and it doesn't transfer to other surfaces (clothes, paper and hair for example).

Now, I work at a desk all day long. I work with paper a great deal, and paper draws out the moisture in your hands. Paper cuts are a common thing for me. Especially in the winter time.

Don't even get me started on the winters here in the Minnesota. We go from 40+ degrees to -12 in just two days. This can reek havoc on your skin. I have torn cuticles, peeling skin and itch from the harsh weather.

Last week I started using Gloves in a Bottle as my daily moisturizer. When I first put it on, I wasn't to sure it would do the job. There was no moisture left on my hands after I had used it, something I have been so used to. I then saw the difference! I got to work, took off my rings ready to put more lotion on...no need!! My hands were great, and my arms were fabulous! No new layer of lotion for me! The directions said to apply every 4 hours, so at the 4 hour mark I added some, even though I didn't seem to need it. Again, no oily aftermath of putting on lotion.

Fast forward three hours later, bathroom time. I washed my hands, and went to put lotion on, but NO NEED!! My hands were as soft as they had been before I washed them. That did me in, I haven't stopped using the lotion since!

You can order this lotion online at the Gloves in a Bottle website. The prices are a bit high for lotion, but when you can get 120 uses out of one bottle, if not more depending on how you use it, it well worth the price. It is also available at many stores, including the textile shop one block from me!! I am not sure what the prices are in the store, but again, very much worth it.

There are testimonials on the website, from doctors to seamstresses. All have said that they wouldn't trade their Gloves in a Bottle for anything. I am starting to agree. From the harsh Minnesota Weather to the everyday tasks I have to tackle, this is a great lotion!

Oh the pain!!

I love my hubby. Very very much. However...he has asked me to do something I just am dreading...(deep breathe)

He wants to take my ipod when he goes to the cabin this weekend. That would leave me ipod-less all weekend long!! Not only that, but I would have to delete all my songs, put his on there and then do it again on Sunday. I listen to my ipod at work, in the car and when I actually have time to take a bath. I use it ALL THE TIME!!

Pure torture!!

I have not been without my ipod in almost two years. So hard to let go...must have tunes...

11 years ago...

Hunter came...8 years ago I met the little boy who changed my life! He made me see things in so many different ways. He taught me patience, trust and hope. He showed me things I had never seen before as only a child can. He made me realize that you could love a child instantly.

In the years since then Hunter has made my life so much more than it ever could have been before. He has brought so much to our family, in so many ways. His love of family, sports and anything outdoors shows how open he is to so many things.

Happy Birthday Hunter! May your love of life continue to grow, and your love of you family be even more.

6 years ago today...part 2!

6 years ago today I stared down at my beautiful little girl. She was perfect in everyway, and I was terrified! When Hunter first saw her, the first things he said were "She looks like Boo from Monsters, Inc!" While her dark brown hair gave way to blond, she still is called Boo.

Since that day Boo has made me laugh, cry and say things I swore I would never say. She makes me wonder every moment where this little person came from, and why I am so lucky. She is so in tune with how her dad and I am, and loves so unconditionally. She will hug her brother in public, and tell him she loves him by yelling accross the room. She will fish with her Daddy, dig in the dirt and be nasty dirty, and still play with her dress up clothes. She loves to be with her family, and her cousins are her best friends. I love the person she is becoming more every day.

Happy Birthday Boo!! Have a great day, and may you always be this happy (even though we know that won't happen).

6 years ago today my hubby, his friend and my sister were playing cards while I slept (lovely pain meds)...

6 years ago today I had the same conversation with my Dad about Denzel Washington 6 times (lovely pain meds)...

6 years ago RIGHT NOW I was still 17 hours away from seeing my Boo...

Skating the day away!

The weather and schedule finally allowed for Hunter to go skating. He was nervous at first, but like with everything, sibling rivalry stepped in. He did great! Wouldn't let me help, and wanted to do it all on his own...the stubbornness reminds me of his daddy!

He and Boo did circles around each other, and helped each other up when they fell. They had the best time!!

After one big spill he was a little more cautious, but if next weekend is good weather-wise we will be out again. And this time he will bring his stick. He is very excited!

Do you remember???

Remember this lovely time last November? We have that again! I love getting colds, and then getting an ear infection. Does my body not know that I am 28 years old! I am not 6 anymore. And the worst part is once again I can't hear anything! It stinks.

Tonight Boo and I were watching the red carpet for the Screen Actors Guild awards. When Zac Efron came on the screen, I thing Boo was going to freak out. She was so excited. She decided then and there..."I am going to write to him and say hi.". ummm...ok...

Am I going to mail it with the two pictures she has drawn for him? Of course. I still remember the letter I wrote to my first "Celeb Crush" Jonathan Brandis.

My voice comes and goes when it feels like it.

I feel like I was driven over by a MAC truck!

This past weekend at the cabin Boon has a nasty nasal cold. It was not a good time for her. We went through a box of Kleenex in three days. Poor thing. Well, yesterday, I woke up with it. Only mine is head, throat, cough and aches.

The joys of being mom, when you daughter is such a giver.

Report card time again

So last night I didn't want to cook, which to Boo automatically means pizza. So pizza it was. Now I feel all blah.

But! On a happier note, Boo gets her first report card today!! She is so excited about it. They sent home this great little note yesterday, reminding parents that kids have different personalities at school, that not all kids are the same and to take a chill pill!

It cracked me up!

I guess her teacher had been hearing a lot about "Why isn't Suzie doing this" and "Why does my child not do this like my other kid does". Don't' compare kids! It doesn't work. Boo and her cousin are one month apart, Boo being older. Dasha is in first grade, went to a charter school at the age of 4 for kindergarten, and is doing great in first grade this year! Boo spent the age of 4 in preschool, and is doing great in Kindergarten this year. They have different levels of knowledge, but are the same age. They still play together and get along wonderfully.

You can't compare children to other children. They all learn on different levels, and hold that knowledge in different ways. Don't stress out the child to live to your standards. They will learn, be patient and it will happen when it happens. You can't even compare one child to their siblings. Boo and Hunter have completely different learning styles, and learning paces. While it is hard not to say "Look what Hunter did in Kindergarten, why can't you do that" I have worked so hard not to do that to either of my kids. They are their own person, and great people at that!

Off to the cabin we go

This weekend, the high temperature was 9...yes 9. That isn't even factoring the wind chill, which made it feel like -10. The low for the weekend...-17, again without the windchill, which was -35.

Now, most people would stay inside with those temperatures. But not if you are from Minnesota!

What did we do this weekend? We went to the cabin, where it was even colder!

Yesterday's high was 6, yes 6. Again, most people would stay inside, stay warm.

Did we?

Nope!

Hubby and his dad decided to go snowmobiling. Just them? Nope!

Hunter and Boo each had a turn. Boo was only out for about 15 minutes, it was her first time. But Hunter, they went about 70 miles. They stopped at a couple restaurants, had some hot chocolate, and came back. He even got to drive at one point.

They both had the best time, and were more than ready for Grandma's chicken noodle soup when they got back!

Wacky Hair Day!

Today was Wacky Hair Day at Boo's school. We had a good time with it, three braids on the bottom, and three ponytails on the top! She had a great time.

FantastaGirl is a Iowa hero, going through the Mom wars every day. Any Mom will hear her stories and nod their heads in agreement.

I have been working on cooking more, and relying on boxed dinners less. Some days it is very hard, but I am getting better. With looking for new things to make all the time, I stumbled upon these blogs.

One is Fab Food Friday. There are some great things on this one. This looks amazingly good.

Another is Leah's Recipe Exchange. I am going to make this next week, and can't wait!

Lastly is The Queen B. I found her via Rocks in my Dryer a couple months ago. Not only is she a wonderful blogger, she has some wonderful sounding recipes on her site. Every weekend she posts a new one, and I love saving them for future use. From her love for family (she took her daughter to Hannah Montana...need I say more?), her love for the Razorbacks (have I told you how sorry I am about the loss?) and her faith, she is a great read.

Check them out...they are all worth the trip!

Works for me Wednesday

It is time for another Works for me Wednesday hosted by Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer.

This week I will talk about keeping myself prepared for the household cleaning we all dread.

It got to the point a few months ago where there were cleaning supplies all over the house, in every bathroom, the kitchen and even the garage. It got to be to much. I ran to Target and got a mini caddy to put all the cleaning supplies in, even the rags and scrubbers. It makes things so much easier, having everything in one spot. Now, when we clean the bathrooms, the caddy goes to the bathroom, then put back under the sink it came from. I no longer have to search for the Windex, Bleach or rags. When spills happen, everything is in one spot.

There are a few stories in the news this week about underage drinking.

A mom in Iowa has sold her sons car after finding alcohol under the seat. She has deemed herself "The meanest Mom on the Planet", and is getting some great feedback from around the country.

Another college student has died in Minnesota as a result of drinking excessively. After a night of drinking games he was found dead in his room, with acute alcohol syndrome. This is the fourth college student with an alcohol related death since last fall. While colleges are working hard to include students in discussion on the perils of alcohol abuse, more students are drinking excessively.

And one story that is making headlines is local as well. Eden Prairie High School has taken action against students involved in athletics and other activities. These students were shown in pictures taking part in parties where they were either drinking or seen holding a drink. The school received these pictures anonymously, as they were taken off of Facebook.com. Students were stripped of their captains letters and suspended from sports. 43 students were questioned, and actions was taken with about 14 of them. It is a brave move by the administration.

With this move came a major response. Some for the school, and some against. Most parents are standing by the school, as they should. Students are angry, calling it a invasion of privacy, even though these pictures were on the Internet, on Facebook.com. This is a free social website, where the pictures were not locked for privacy.

In Minnesota, in order to participate in athletics you must sign the code of conduct for the Minnesota State High School League. There are no exceptions.

It also states: 20. *MOOD-ALTERING CHEMICALS
A. Bylaw Twelve (12) months of the year, a student shall not at anytime, regardless of the quantity:
(1) use or consume, have in possession a beverage containing alcohol;
(2) use or consume, have in possession tobacco; or,
(3) use or consume, have in possession, buy, sell, or give away any other controlled substance or drug paraphernalia.
1. The bylaw applies continuously from the first signing of the student Eligibility Brochure.
2. It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a controlled substance specifically prescribed for the student’s own use by her/his doctor
The student/parent authorizes the release of documents and other pertinent information by the school in order to determine student eligibility.
If found, there will be a automatic two game suspension for each violation.

In this case, students were suspended two games for each picture they were in where they were in possession of the substance.

There are currently 1172 comments on this story on the startribune.com site. I added my opinion on Thursday when there were only 174 comments...you can see that has many people on many sides. My comment is below:

"As a recent high school athlete, I took the code of conduct very seriously. We lost 4 seniors my sophomore year, because pictures went around of them drinking and other things at a party. The coach found out, the principal called them in and they were suspended for the remainder of the year. One girl lost her scholarship, but it forced her to work harder to pay her own way freshman year. She was awarded a scholarship the next year, for academics. Her parents stood behind the school and their decision. They would not ask the school to change their minds, because it was laid out clearly in the code of conduct.If the children took their athletics seriously, they would have realized that the Minnesota State High School League means business, and does not mess around with underage drinking. They state in the code of conduct that off campus drinking is forbidden, no ifs ands or buts. Forbidden! If a child does not want to sign the contract, they don’t play sports for any school.In a time when more and more college students are dying from drinking, why are we standing by blasting Eden Prairie for their great choice? We should support them in their quest to make their athletic program the best if can be, with students that want to obey the rules they signed up for, voluntarily. I only hope that my children’s school is as on top of this as Eden Prairie. Good for them!!"

Works for me Wednesday - Backwards Edition

It is time to get back into the swing of things around here...

It is time again for Works for me Wednesday hosted by Shannon over at Rocks in my Dryer. This week is the wonderful backwards edition that helped me oh so much last time around (we now have under bed storage for sweaters, but still not tying the shoes...)

Today we have a problem I am sure many of you face, so I am waiting to hear all your vast knowledge.

Boo had long hair, past the middle of her back. Not only is it long, it is super thick (one of the few things she got from me and not Hubby). It is difficult to brush it wet, unless you break it into about 10 sections and do one at a time. That is not the problem however.

When she sleeps, she sleeps hard. She moves around a lot, and it causes major problems. Every morning she awakes with a birds nest on the back of her head. We had one so bad last week I was late to work getting it out! It is terrible. We have tried putting high ponytails in, and braids. But she moves so much they are out within the hour, and we have the same problem all over again. Detangler doesn't help get the mass out, nothing seems too. I have told her that we could get it cut to make it easier, and less tearful, but she likes her long hair and FREAKS out everytime I bring it up.

hmmm...

The past few weeks have been pretty chaotic. With the holidays and trying to get back into the school days grove things are all upside down. Plus, Hunter and Boo have their birthdays in a month, so we are working on the planning those as well. Because I obviously have nothing else to do!

With that said, highlights since New Years...

MJ hit the 3 lbs mark! That is major news around here. She is now 46 days old, and doing FABULOUS!!!

Boo went to her first ever slumber party (more on that a little later) this weekend

The kid spent a total of almost 7 hours outside this weekend,(and Boo has the cold to prove it). It went from -7 to 47 in two days. The weather has been amazing for January in Minnesota. Not so great for Wisconsin, Illinois and others.

I had a wonderful cocktail chat session with one of my besties from high school. Hopefully we will get together again before she leaves.

Hubby is going on the yearly manly ice fishing trip to Lake Mille Lacs this weekend. This means I will be able to scrapbook this weekend! Woohoo!! I am behind, but get a lot done on the weekends he is gone.

The Polar Plunge

There is a tradition in Minnesota called the Polar Plunge. This is when incredibly crazy people cut a large hole in the ice, set up float barriers and JUMP IN. Into the water that officials say is the coldest it has been in 10 years. Where there are 15 inches on snow in some parts, and it was only 7 out when this took place.

Off track...sorry.

So, people donate money to charity for the chance to jump into cold freezing water for 30 seconds and swim out. There are people standing by with blankets and medical treatment when people realize just how crazy in case people need it. people are also standing on the edge of the open water with poles, to pull you out if your body freaks out...like normal peoples...and you can't make your way out alone.

The point of this? Well, two guys from my work did the Polar Plunge this year. One from my team, who has done this before, and the other from another department. This would not be a normally blog worthy event, but they were captured on CNN. There is video of a bunch of people jumping into Lake Minnetonka on New Years Day.

Happy New Years!!

Another year has ended, one of major events and moments. We ended the year with our good friend Beana and her boys. Boo just loves her boys, and they feel the same. Hubby had to work and brother-in-law came over as well, as Sister was working the night away. They had a great night of playing, eating and getting to play on the Wii. As we watched the year come to an end, the kids came down to watch the count down. Loaded with Happy New Year beads and noise makers they rang the New Year in right, LOUD. But they had a great time doing it. After calls to Hubby and Sister Beana and the boys left. The minute her youngest hit the seat, he was out. They lasted til New Years, but not much beyond.

New Years Day was spent with Mom, as she is a New Years Baby. We had breakfast at a favorite place, so she could have her potato pancakes. After that we went to a couple stores, and ended up at a great Goodwill. New boots for Boo, books for both of us for under $10! I love bargains.

Boo went back to school today, thankfully. She was excited to get back and see her friends. She is gearing up for her first ever sleep over birthday party, and can't wait! She is counting the days, and so am I. Hunter and I will get some great one-on-one time.

Can you hear the peace and quiet???

We are done...finished...completely out of our minds ready for Boo to go back to school done!

Today we had our last Christmas celebration. Between our families we have lots of people to visit and see, and it takes sometimes two weeks to get it all taken care of. But we see so many people, and get so much love from them. It was a great holiday!!

My nutso lovely children spent so much time taking things out of packages, plugging them in and testing them out. There were so many favorites, but the best high tech toy we got was this Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii. I love this game! Hunter is amazing at it, and blows me out of the water everytime. He just moves perfectly. Once he went downtown with Grammy and had teenages cheering him on, and he was close to beating the high score. Hunter is a Rock Star!!

We also had books, dolls and movies galore. Legos, games and craft material. New hats and gloves, ATM Banks and ice skates. Yes...ice skates.

I admit, I was a little nervous about these. Remeber the roller skating party? Not my pain...but Boo. If not take a moment and reflect...don't worry. I will wait....

Caught up? Okay, so you understand my nerves right? Well did she ever prove me wrong! WAY WAY WRONG! It was great! Christmas Day while Hubby was sleeping (he had to work both holiday nights) Boo and I spent the day with Grammy. We watched Care Bears: The Nutcracker, which was pretty cute. After we went to the park near Grammy's house and we went skating. It started out a little rough. Boo didn't want to let go of Grammy, and I didn't want to let go of her. But, after only about 10 minutes she was skating away on her own! No one was more shocked then I. I was so proud of her! Of course she fell some, but she always got right back up and skated away.

We have gone out again since then, and she kicked me off the ice!! The little brat skating machine told me "Mom, go over there, I got it now". I was a little hurt, but gave her her space. By the end of the time on Thursday she was turning around without stopping, and using her Toe Pick like a pro. Oh the fun times to be had.

Oh happy day!

I am a scrapbook addict. Hubby wants to send me somewhere to detox it gets so bad sometimes.

St. Nikolas Day

Boo has her holiday sing along at school tomorrow, and then her holiday party. She is so excited, and can't wait to sing all the fun songs.
For the past three weeks, her class has been going on wonderful trips, and learning about all the holidays in other countries. They even made passports! From Holland, Germany, Sweden, Israel all the way to Africa and England. She talks about wooden shoes, fancy shoes and Menorahs. I am so excited that she has had more chances to learn these important things. Learning about other cultures is such a wonderful gift, and I hope she continues to enjoy it as much as she can!!

Is it time yet?

One more day of work this week, and the Christmas festivities can begin! We always have lots of places to go over Christmas, so much family that we want to see. And this year, for the first time ever we have NOWHERE to go on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I am a little excited about that. Yes, Hunter goes back to his Mom's on Monday night, and I do have to work for 4 hours on Monday, but other than that...there is nothing going on. What am I going to do with my time? I have no clue, but I am excited.
After the excitement of our friend coming in from Colorado, I was anticipating the arrival of my high school bestest, and she has ARRIVED!! I am so very excited for her visit, and can't wait to spend time together. It has been almost 10 years since we have seen each other, and it seems like no time at all. We have spent so much time catching up, that the first visit will be chatting about the old days, and the fact that I have all the pictures! She can't wait to go through my photo album. Even back then I always had a camera with me, I just love taking pictures. (memo to self...charge the camera batteries before tomorrow...)
Seeing family is a huge part of the holidays, along with all the phone calls to give Christmas Wishes. Remember the loved ones far away this year, make a phone call you normally wouldn't and share the holiday spirit.

She is not an awful person

By now, everyone has head that Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant at 16. This does not make her an awful person, or a potentially bad parent in the end. It makes her a 16 year old who made a REALLY bad choice. Yes, she is in the public eye, and yes she will pay the professional consequences of her actions. But this happens everyday around the country, and no one gets appalled when a 16 year old from Ohio gets pregnant, except her family.

Again, this does not make her an awful person, just not the role-model we want for young girls. Zoey 101 will not be allowed to play in my house any longer because I have a young girl who doesn't need to grow up that fast. While they have the next season of Zoey 101 already done, that doesn't excuse it.

In today's society it is common place for teens of her age to become pregnant. Even 12 years ago it wasn't this common, there weren't as many pregnant teens, and young mothers. It scares me to think of my daughter growing up in the time where this is considered normal. I know how things were when I was 16, and it is many times worse now.

Working to protect my child from this is the main worry I have. The conversations, being open about such a sensitive subject is something that all parents face, however it never gets any easier. From the first "Where do babies come from?" question, to the "big talk" parents dread this conversation, and the questions that follow. It is just as scary, and important as the drug and alcohol conversation.

Being honest and open is the most important thing to remember. Children and Teens are going to question you, asking why and how. They want as much knowledge as possible. They want to do what is right, but can't without the knowledge. Please remember that even the best of kids makes bad choices and won't always be honest about it.

I can only hope that the Spears family takes a look at the situation and continues to support Jamie Lynn. She has made a very hard decision, and I respect her for that. Hopefully she will take her families support and run with it, not away from it.

Oh happy day!

This weekend was a quiet one. I did some more baking, Boo went skating with her uncle and cousins, and we watched some un-eventful football. We had friend spend the night Friday, and like alway played the Wii into the early morning hours. So worth it though, as we don't get to see them nearly enough.

BUT the highlight was so simple and so exciting. Our friend is home from Colorado, and just in time for Christmas with his family. We have missed him over this past year, and not been in as much contact as we all would have liked. I am so excited he is in a less dangerous job, and taking better care of himself.

Hubby calls him Slappy, so that is his name once again. He came over last night, and I ran and jumped. It takes a special person to make me jump into their arms, and he is one of them. After some visiting the boys went off the play pool while Boo and I finished the baking, took a tub and ate some yummy dinner. Such a great end to the weekend.

HELP!!!

This is me...freaking out just a little bit. I need your help, so please please please...

What do you get for a 10 year old boy!! Why is Hunter so hard to shop for this year!! We have his movie, his cd and his books. We even got him this, how cool is that! He likes sports, he likes movies and music. He loves to read, but hates art stuff. He is growing up and I am at a LOSS!! Any tips or ideas would be VERY VERY much appreciated!!

For the animals

The student council at Boo's school is hosting a wonderful fundraiser. Everyday this week the kids bring in a different kind of coin, Monday was pennies, yesterday was quarters, today is dimes and tomorrow is nickles. Friday they can bring in whatever they have left...a combo if they want. All the funds are going to our local Humane Society.
I told Boo that we would give her some change, but if she wanted more than that she would have to think about taking it from her piggy bank. She thought about it over night, and this morning came running with the jangle of her piggy bank. She wiped herself out! I made her leave some, but it was really only about a dollar worth of change.
I love her giving heart. The minute she heard that it was for animals, she was set on giving as much as she could. She even asked if we could volunteer there this summer. She has such a loving heart.

I will be the first one to tell you that I am so very out of shape. I don't do much besides walking, and that has been hindered in the past few weeks between work and sickness. That also doesn't really do much on the arms and upper back area.


The point to all this honesty?


Boo had a birthday party to go to this past weekend. I went with since I am pretty close with the mom of the little girl. It was a great time, and all the dance class girls were there. There was only one small problem...it was at a roller rink.


Oh my goodness...


Boo has never skated in her LIFE, and I haven't since I was 16 or so, 12 years ago. Since Boo hadn't skated before, who do you think had to throw on some skates and go around and around and around with her? You would be right...Mommy.


I will say that I have never laughed so much in my entire life. Boo did fall...a lot. But she got better, and I am very proud of her. After the first hour of non-stop falling she would make it almost all the way around without a fall. She was frustrated at first, but then would laugh when she fell or started to lose her balance.


She even did a classic cartoon move. Think of when a cartoon tries to run really really fast from standing still. The way their legs move...got it in your head? Now put Boo's body on it. It was Hilarious! She laughed too, so I wasn't being a mean Mom.


I will even admit that I fell once, in order to not run over Boo...figured that was the best thing.


So, back to the out of shape part of the story...


Sunday I couldn't hardly move my arms! After holding on to Boo, and using leg muscles that I haven't used in a very long time I was sore! My back is a little sore from being tense holding her up and helping her get up off the floor. Hubby kept calling me the old lady, since every time I would get up off the couch I would moan in pain...


The left arm still hurts today, so good that I am left handed and I type all day long!

Oh Christmas Tree!!

Tonight we put up out Christmas Decorations. I always thinks I have so much, but I don't really. Plus, there aren't many places to put things. We do have fun with what we have though, and that is what really counts.

The kids did the Christmas tree like always. It is their tree, not mine. When we get a bigger tree I will have more control, but for now it is all theirs.

They each have special ornaments, as do I. Hunter has his ornament from 2001, when he was on his Tigger kick. He loved that hoppy thing.

Boo has her first Christmas ornament that she still loves to sit and look at.

I have an ornament from a Great Aunt that I have had for almost 15 years. I love this ornament. It is simple and inexpensive, but sometimes they are the best ones.

We also have Hubby's Santa Vikings Fan that he got our first Christmas together. It cracks me up every time we pull it out.

There are the snow ball heads that I got from my mother in law last year. They are Home Interior, and I love them!

Lastly we have our first ever family ornament. Since Hunter was on a Tigger kick when Hubby and I first moved in together, of course it is Disney.

The kids did a great job on putting up the tree and putting everything in it's own place. They are always so proud.

After they went to bed I got to have the fun of putting the rest of the decorations up. I had my Reindeer that sings "Grandma got Run Over by a Reindeer" and I love it!

And I have a skating snow man display (also Home Interiors). The little snowman actually skates around when the lights are on. I love it!

Now we just have to wait for Boo to make her Christmas pictures and we will be all decorated.

Remember

Today is a important day in our family. Today is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. We had a family member leave the island 1 day before the attack, and are internally grateful for his safety.

Today is also my nephews birthday! Woohoo!! After the rough fall Dookie had, he is doing great, and all recent tests show nothing abnormal. We also had other exciting news...but he would hurt me if I told you. I will leave it at No surgery is a fabulous thing!

Remember those who lost their lives today, and the lives that came into the world.

Where do the years go...

8 years ago today Hubby and I had our first date. He picked me up, and we went back to his house to watch a movie, Austin Powers International Man of Mystery. Who doesn't like a few FemBots on a first date! We had a ton of conversation and lots of laughs.

Who would have thought that 8 years later we would be married and have children. Such a wonder where time takes you, and what those journeys bring.

The Great Cookie Bake Off is complete

I was going to do this later, but since Hubby is playing cards with the neighbors, why not.

The Great Cookie Bake Off was a huge success! We made 7 different types of holiday snacks, and had lunch. It was a great day!

We started out making sugar cookies so they would be cool for the kids to decorate. Boo and her friend had the best time. They made ones with patterns, stripes, chunks of colors and very simple. The creativity of children always amazes me. We had about 3 dozen in the end. Only one casualty, but Hubby ate it as quality control.

Next up was the Corn Flakes Wreathes. We used to make these all the time growing up, and it was a true throw back day. Both of the kids took turns stirring up the marshmallows with the butter, Sister and I took over once we added the corn flakes. The kids made a ton of mini wreathes, and even hid some of the cinnamon dots under leaves so whoever ate them would get a surprise! Such nice kids we had baking today.

After we ate lunch, the kids started dipping pretzels, which got boring pretty quick, and Simpson's Operation was calling their names. Sister and I took over, and once again insults were (jokingly) thrown and chocolate landed on hands instead of pretzels. It was great! We did a bunch of pretzels in two shifts, with others in between.

We made these too, since they are one of Sister's favorites. I still can't get over how easy they are. There are enough to bring to work on Monday, they have been asking about the cookies.

We also started some Peppermint Bark, even though I didn't think we would get too. Sister wanted to see how to do it so she could bring some to work as well. It is so easy and doesn't take much time at all.

We made these, only with green and red to fit the season. We also didn't use the bread pan, rolled them thinner and cut them prior to baking. Just like Mom used to make! Good thing she was here to remind us.

Last but very much not least we made the fabulous wonderful Peanut Butter Blossoms. Oh my. So. Very.Good! I have eaten way to many already, but that is the joy of being the honorary taste tester. Nominated by me of course! Boo loves making these, has the best time rolling the dough in sugar and pushing down the Hershey's Kiss. We used a different recipe then normal, straight off the Kiss wrapper. They are so good. Hang on...have to wipe the drool off. (Yes Brooke...I am making more since these are being inhaled!!)

Even with the 6" of snow we got today ( and it is still coming down a little bit), we baked the day away. My hands hurt they are so dry from all the dishes and hand washing. My feet and knees are aching like they only do when I cook a lot. We had three burns, Me, Sister and Boo, but mine is the worst, and in the worst spot. Sister and Boo have them on a knuckle, me...4 inches down the inside of the arm. It is a real talent to hear "Careful of that pan" then reach for something and HIT THAT PAN. Boo took care of me, held my arm under the cold water and kept checking on it throughout the day. Such a good heart she has.


I love baking with Sister, she is so good at it, and I am just okay. But together we are fabulous. The kids had a great time, and Hubby handled us all day very well.
