Five For Fighting - Review

For many years I have been listening to Five for Fighting, the music speaks so clearly. John Ondrasik is the song writer for Five for Fighting, and the singer. His voice is so mellow, calming and true. He writes the way he sings, deeply personal.

Listening to the newest album, Slice, has been great. Hearing his voice, his words and the simple way he delivers both is pure joy.

If every album provides snapshots of where an artist's mind at heart is at the moment, Slice, the latest offering from John Ondrasik (aka Five for Fighting), is a collection of digital jpegs and faded Polaroids.

The very personal level of his songs is something so few artists have, so many don’t write their own music. This is something that drew me to him, and kept me hooked from the beginning.

Not only is John Ondrasik a wonderful musician, he is involved in social media and more importantly some wonderful charities. In 2007 John launched the charity website whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com. It raises money for many charities when visitors view videos provided by other visitors. The current view count…3 million! That translate to $300,000 donated.

John is also a strong supporter of the US Troops. He has performed at Guantanamo Bay, Hawaii, Guam & Japan through USO Tours. With that John created a CD of fabulous recording that is available to any active service person for free!

John has composed songs for many movies, most recently August Rush, We Were Solders and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. He was also featured on a promo for the new show The Good Wife this past week.

Five For Fighting’s newest album “Slice” is a strong contender for my new favorite, it has power, patience and quiet. It fits so well with any mood, something that is important as I constantly listen to my Ipod at work.

Brandi Carlile - Review and Giveaway

Brandi Carlile is a guitar playing Washington bred amazement. She is a part of VH1’s “You Oughta Know” collection, and has had many of her songs featured on episodes of my favorite show “Grey’s Anatomy”.

Brandi Carlile reminds me of the Indigo Girls, one of my favorite duos. She very soulful, with a bit of country/blue grass. She sings from the heart, and leaves it all out there for you to hear.

Her new album, "Give Up the Ghost" gave her the opportunity to work with Elton John, and record at Sunset Sound (where The Doors have recorded…The Doors people!). They recorded this album live, and with some pretty cool instruments.

Brandi Carlile isn’t an artist I would have picked for myself, but I am so glad that I had the chance to listen to this album. Her voice is incredible, and the lyrics are real life. So many artists don’t take the time to record their own songs, let alone write them. The fact that she and her band, “The Twins” took the time to write and record their own music speaks to the type of album they wanted to create.

Michael Buble - Crazy Love

Harry Connick Jr.'s "Your Songs" - review

Harry Connick Jr. is a man of many talents. He is an actor, a singer and a song writer. His talents have been well known for many years, and a staple especially during the Holiday season. Many of his Christmas songs are played in our house.

Harry Connick Jr. just released his latest album, Your Songs on September 22nd. This is a collection of all-time classic songs originally sung by Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, The Carpenters and Elton John to name a few. These are songs we are all familiar with, “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”, “Smile” and “The Way You Look Tonight” to give you sample.

Harry Connick Jr. is promoting his new album in the coming weeks, starting with Imus in the Morning tomorrow morning, and David Letterman in the evening. After that he is on the Today Show on Thursday and next week Rachel Ray.

I was given the chance to hear Harry Connick Jr’s. new album, Your Songs, and have mixed feelings about it. I love the full orchestra and/or jazz band, but miss Harry Connick Jr. playing the piano. I missed that intimate feel from some of his previous work.

The songs chosen are wonderful, and very much within his range. I love that he did a few not as well known songs, it gave the album a bit of mystery. However, I do wish he had some original music on this album, which is what I have been waiting for.

All in all, this is a good album, with the classic Harry Connick sound. There is something about his voice that always calls you back.

Zhu Zhu Pets Review and Giveaway

I am always on the hunt for fun toys for Boo. She loves animals, wants more pets and needs something that she will enjoy.

When I had the opportunity to review Zhu Zhu Pets for MomSelect I jumped at the chance. We had seen them on tv in the past few weeks, and Boo was interested enough that she squealed when the box arrived last week.

She didn’t want to wait long to dive in, but we had to for a few days. But tonight was the night. Big Sis was here for dinner, so I had some extra hands to get things set up, and I am thankful I did! No sooner was something out of the box did Boo have it on the floor ready to go.

Boo loves Zhu Zhu Pets. She thinks they are adorable, even using that “mommy voice” she thinks she needs to use when talking to something cute. As annoying as that voice is, she is happy and LOVING the Zhu Zhu Pets.

Some info:
Zhu Zhu Pets are interactive hamsters that move, talk (in a strange voice) and can move around their habitats and “fun areas”. There are 9 different play sets that can connected to create a large habitat for your hamster.

If you pet your Zhu Zhu Pet, it squeaks, talks and makes some cool noises. Boo loves this part of it! I had to remind her a couple times that it wasn’t a real hamster, after she tried to bring it to bed with her.

Zhu Zhu Pets are made for children 4 and up, but I would put it more at 6 for moving the toy and simple assembly. There was no way Boo could have put the habitats together, they can be a bit difficult. Once assembly and some simple instructions she was off, making her hamster scoot around the “home”.

The website is full of helpful information, from trouble shooting tips to FAQ's about the products. I spent a great deal of time navigating around the site, and found everything I looked for, which is not always the case. This was a huge plus for me.

While it is great Zhu Zhu Pets can move on their own, we did find that they got stuck going up the ramp and getting into the Hamster Wheel. Once you gave them a bit of a nudge they were on their way, but that was frustrating at first.

We also found that once you have the tunnels connected, it can be hard to get them apart again. While the adults would eventually be able to get them apart, there is no way Boo could do it, or even Hunter. We set the rule that she had to ask for help, and that works fine for us.

All in all, Zhu Zhu Pets are a great toy. They are cute, fun and something new. Boo has been playing with hers all day today!

CSN - All Children's Furniture Review

The rainy days have come…and come…and come. We spent most of the summer wishing for rain, begging for a storm. Last week it finally happened, and while we couldn’t have been happier it left two icky indoor days in a row for my kids.

Thank goodness I had a couple projects that they could work on.

I was recently contact by CSN to review a couple craft projects from All Children’s Furniture.com. My kids love craft projects, and know that I always am willing to dig one out for a rainy day.

This time I had the Works of Ahhh…Bird Feeder Kit. They were able to decorate the bird feeder anyway they chose, and we are hanging it in the back yard. We have seen many birds coming to it, and this has created a new game for them. They race to find out what bird it is this time, keeping the bird book close.

We also were lucky enough to try the Kitchen Chemistry kit. Like the website says, it “is a safe way to explore chemistry without blowing up the house”. My kids LOVE it! They have made rock candy, bubbles, slime and all kinds of other things using only what we have in the kitchen!

The chemistry set is one that they had to wait for me, but the bird feeder they were able to do on their own. You should have seen the excitement on their faces when they showed me what they had done!

CSN has over 200 stores in their network, you can find anything you could possibly be looking for from office supplies to bunk beds. They have kid’s smocks and patio furniture all at great prices. I even saw a great website for pet supplies! Koda will be benefiting from that one!

There customer service line is open 7 days a week, always willing to answer your questions. I love musicals, and I say it all the time. It is the perfect combination of music and movies. You get the tunes, and the story line. I have heard some wonderful soundtracks, and some not so great ones.

Rock of Ages is a good one.

Rock of Ages is a five-time Tony Award Nominated Broadway show, and it is jam packed with songs originally recorded by Twisted Sister, Poison and Whitesnake.

Staring American Idol Finalist Constantine Maroulis, Rock of Ages is set in 1987 at the Famous Sunset Strip rock club. Here he meets a small town girl looking to make it big in the music industry. Through a series of events they come together, apart and then together again, to the tune of Journey, Bon Jovi and Styx.

I was apprehensive about this album at first. Who doesn’t love “We Built This City”, “Here I Go Again” or “Wanted Dead or Alive”, but how would they pull the songs into a musical. But this soundtrack sounds like a rock album, not a musical soundtrack, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

Yes, the soundtrack does have a bit of a cheese factor, but what soundtrack doesn’t. The great music and great singing make up for, 10 times over. This soundtrack has been in my cd player since the day it came, my kids are hooked!

Alice is wonderful!!

Oh Alice, how long I have searched for you...

You have no idea how giddy I was when Musings of a Housewife e-mailed me letting me know that I won a $100 gift card to Alice.

Please tell me you have heard of Alice. The bloggy world has been a-buzz with news of Alice. This is the most wonderful shopping site I have seen, for the thing you are always in need of: toilet paper, zip-loc bags, cleaning supplies and even snacks!

I spent almost two days looking at what I needed, wanted and HAD to get. We are always running out of things in our house, like many houses with kids. We can always use tooth paste, shampoo and zip-loc bags. We always use tin foil, our Swiffer and glass cleaner.

So today, the cute little blue and black boxes came via UPS, only two days after I placed my order. I saw the UPS Man drive up, and was waiting outside before he even got out of his truck. I dove into those boxes before he was BACK to his truck.

Everything was packaged so nicely. The dishwasher detergent was in a bag so the odor wouldn't seep into other things, and in case of a spill, same with the dryer sheets. We all know how strong those can be, so having them wrapped to block it was nice. Anything with a plunger was taped down to prevent accidental spills, and all was protected by recycled bubble wrap.

There are so many extras to Alice, I don't know where to begin.

• Free Shipping...always!
• Budgeting tools! You can monitor your monthly spending and see where to cut back.
• COUPONS!! They have so many coupons! I was able to save almost $20 this order with their vast amount of coupons.
• The ease of shopping at home. When you notice that you are running low on anything, get your order ready.

With the good, there are always bads.

• Must have at least three items to order. This isn't really a bad, but something that some might find inconvenient.
• While you may have a coupon for laundry detergent, Alice may not have it. There isn't a way to apply your own coupons.
• Bulk items not available. I buy the HUGE bottle of laundry detergent, and that size is not available online (probably for weight reasons). There are also no bulk paper towels, which we use plenty. They have three rolls max, but I usually buy 12 at a time.

17 Again

Thanks to a great fellow-bowling Mom, we scored tickets to the preview screening of 17 Again in our area. Big Sis came along, and we didn't tell Boo where we were going.

Yes it's a school night, but celebrity crush...come on now...

Zac Efronstars in this movie along with Michelle Trachtenberg, Matthew Perry, Leslie Mann and Thomas Lennon.

Zac Efron plays young Mike O'Donnell, a high school basketball star who gives it all away for his future family. He marries Scarlett (Leslie Mann), and the life soon looses is luster. Matthew Perry plays the adult Mike.

During a rain storm, he somehow becomes the young Mike again (Zac Efron). He sees this as a chance to do things differently and make changes to what was. He soon realizes that basketball was not what he needed to change, but his children and the ending relationship with his wife should be his focus.

Only problem, he is in the body of the 17 year old.

The movie was good, but predictable. It followed the path we all knew it would, but it added humor and teenage attitude. Zac Efron gets himself into some interesting situations as young Mike, but (of course) finds his way out.

This movie is rated PG-13, some adult language and (this cracks me up) "Teenage Partying". This is one that we will see again when it comes out on video.

Yanni Voices CD

Remember when I raved about Yanni Voices?

Now that I have the CD, it is even more obvious how outstanding this group of artists are, with Yanni's instrumentals playing right along.

Thanks to One2One Network, my CD arrived just days after the release.

It has been playing non-stop since.

The vocal arrangements have moved me many times, and I have been caught up in the music often. I have even played it for my kids, and they love it as well.

These young artists are outstanding. Their vocal ranges and achievements are unparalleled to anything I have heard in a long time. They are able to bring a mood to a song, and bring the words to life.

While many of the songs are in other languages, you can still hear the emotion and meaning behind them. Music transcends all language barriers when sung with power and emotion. You don't have to know the language to understand the words, simply listen.

This is a CD that I would definitely suggest you run out and get, or order.

Don't forget that Yanni Voices is now on tour and I wish I could see them when they are here. If you have the opportunity, take it!

Ears are fun

Yanni Voices

Many years ago, I danced to this great song, Reflections of Passion. It was a pure instrumental song by Yanni. While the dance wasn't that great, this song has been a favorite ever since.

Yanni has a long history of creating amazing music, and has passed his gifts and knowledge onto four new artists, all in part of Yanni Voices. Working with four young artists, Yanni is debuting new music with amazing vocals.

Some of you may have seen a couple of the artists this past weekend at Blissdom, but listening to the tracks on-line are outstanding.

Nathan Pacheco has such powerful vocals. I love how his voice carries, and you can tell he sings from the heart. Nathan is from Washington DC, and wants to travel with world showing his voice. He sings his songs in Latin, and carries the spirit of his surroundings. He draws in what nature can give, and it comes out in his songs.

Chloe has a powerful voice, one that draws you in. Her songs bare her own soul, and will engage emotions in you that you didn't think music could. With her opera training, her love for classic rock and her talent for pop there is nothing this songstress can't achieve. She is definitely one to watch on her climb.

Ender Thomas is another powerful voice. This Venezuelan-born artist has a magical voice that has limitless depth. He has worked to discover the full extent of his talent, and pushing past the boundaries. His time working with the other artists has produced a great duet with Chloe, along with his own great songs. He is an amazing Latin singer.

The last artist that is a part of Yanni Voices, is Leslie Mills. Born in Kentucky, this young lady has worked very hard at her craft, being a part of a folk-rockin band, To the Moon Alice. Now, working with Yanni has shown her a new side of her music, allowing her to write to Yanni's incredible accompaniment. Her voice is so gentle, almost delicate. Her lyrics are quite powerful, and in motion with a different set of instrumentals allows her to explore even more.

There are so many different levels of romance in music, and these artists touch on each one. From soft and emotional to powerful and strong there is something for everyone.

Yanni has put together such an outstanding group of artists, and there are a few ways that you can take your own look at each of them. The Yanni Voices Tour is starting in April, and going all over the country with a great many dates.

On March 2nd there is a PBS special. Not only will there be a showcase of the wonderfully talented artists, there will be information about the work this group of people has done. I will definitely be watching this, as I can't get enough of the videos on-line.

Finally, on March 24th the Yanni Voices cd drops. This is something that I will be getting. This is powerful music, and something my collection needs.

The Lion fell in love with the Lamb...

This weekend I saw a movie for the second time.

I read the books, all four.

I had seen the interviews, but still I resisted.

I saw Twilight. Again.

I am addicted!

The books are great, and I was hooked after I read Twilight. Stephanie Meyer did an amazing job bringing these characters to life, and the transfer to film was wonderful.

I have talked to a few people at work that asked why I was hooked on these books, then the movie. "Isn't this a teenager book?".

Yes, but Stephanie Meyer was prepared for adults to love this book. She loves these characters, and knew other people her own age would as well as the young adults.

When I first picked up the book, I wasn't sure if I would like it. I love sci-fi books, but this isn't even really that. While it has vampires as the characters, it isn't as much about vampires as it is about the relationships between the characters.

The stories follow the vampire path, but with so much more. The romance between Bella and Edward, then he leaves and the relationship between Bella and Jacob. Then, they come together and the mix is incredible. So much more than a book about vampires (and werewolves).

On top of that, the book was written to young adults, not grown-ups. Some level of cheesiness was expected. It wasn't that bad really.

The movie was wonderful. I loved it. I knew it would be "immature" and made for young adults, but it still flowed like any other movie. Girl sees Boy, Boy freaks out and runs, Boy loves Girl, Girl loves Boy, Vampire tries to kill Girl, Boy saves Girl.

See, completely normal.

The location for the movie was amazing. The forests they shot in, they were spectacular. The light coming in from the tree breaks and the aerial shots were incredible. I always seem to forget there are places like that all around us.

The cast was wonderful, a great combination of actors. They each played their roles so well. While I may not have chosen this guy to play Carlisle, it worked. And having the actress that played Ava/Rebeca from Grey's Anatomy was a bit strange, but it worked pretty well.

There are so many things I could say about this movie, this book and OH THE SOUNDTRACK. You had to know that I would take it there, I mean come on. I love my music!

This soundtrack is not my normal listening style. The music is harsh and loud, along with the single Opera song thrown in. There are ballads and rough emotional songs as well.

Robert Pattinson has two songs on this soundtrack, and he is actually quite amazing. He did an interview where he said his music was his back-up...a pretty good back-up in my mind. I would buy his album.

The songs hit the movie head on. They show the confusion, the anger and the love. They are able to take you through the movie without seeing it. The music is that wonderful.

Linkin Park, Collective Soul and Paramore are the most familiar artists on the cd, but I am seeking them all out. Such a great collection, I can't wait to find more on each artist.

I do think that Linkin Park's "Leave out all the Rest" is one of my favorite songs.

"I dreamed I was missing, you were so scared. No one would listen, cause no one else cared. After my dreaming, I woke with this fear. What am I leaving...so if you're asking me, I want you to know...When my time comes, forget the wrong that I've done. Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed...Don't resent me, and when you're feeling empty, keep me in your memory, leave out all the rest, leave out all the rest."

Such powerful lyrics, and the rest of the song is even better. Here is the video for the song.

The rest of the songs are equally amazing, this one simply stands out.

Along with the lyrical soundtrack, there is also the Score. Carter Burwell is the artist that plays each song, and he is phenomenal.

The scene in the movie where Edward is leading Rosalie and Esme through the woods to throw off the tracker is a powerful scene. It shows the dedication and drive he has to protect her, and Rosalie's want to walk away from it all. The instrumental that accompanies that part of the movie is incredible. It has such power, while still keeping a softer side. I can't wait to get this one.

This is a movie that Hubby rolls his eyes at me about, but that I would see again in a heartbeat. It comes out a DVD March 21st, and yes I will be getting it. Yes, I will also be seeing New Moon when it comes out later this year.

Is it a good book, yes.

A good movie, yes.

A good soundtrack, heck yes!

Pampered Chef Cut N Seal

My kids are not picky eaters. There are very few things they won't eat, and that is only before they get the "You get what you get and you don't have a fit" talk. They will eat what gets put in front of them.

There is one or two exceptions, but those are so minor that I don't worry about them and allow them.

Boo's big one, is crusts. Period. It doesn't matter what kind of bread, toasted or not. She does not like crusts. For a while I let her pull them off, but then one of the lunch supervisors said something to us. They didn't know if we knew she was doing this, and thought it would be a problem.

I told my mother in law about this, and she had an easy solution. She pulled out the Cut-N-Seal from Pampered Chef. She had ordered it long ago for the grand kids and never used it.

The Cut-N-Seal is so easy to use, and works wonderfully. Boo will never have a crusted sandwich when I make her lunch.

Now I have used this for a few months, and have never used it with anything but Peanut Butter and Jelly. Don't know if it will work with meat or anything that needs more room, but PBJ is perfect.

Step 1 - Spread PB&J on the middle portion of the bread. Don't go all the way to the edge, as that will be tossed. I put Peanut Butter on both sides, to have a guard against jelly seeping out.


Step 2 - Put your two halves together, and put the Cut-N-Seal in the middle of your sandwich. Press down firmly. No need to turn, but I have found it comes off the discarded pieces easier if you give a little twist.


Step 3 - Pull away the crust and surrounding pieces. Eat or toss, completely up to you (I usually eat as my breakfast!).


Step 4- Pull the Cut-N-Seal off your sandwich, pull out if stuck (not a big deal, it happens and will not hurt your sandwich in the least).

The price is right, only $9.00! Such an easy price for such a lifesaver for Boo. Plus, it fits right into my kitchen drawer, takes no more room than a measuring cup.

Enjoy! I love the Cut-N-Seal!! It is perfect for school lunches or snacks. Boo loves opening her lunch box and finding one of these, her friends are often jealous.

Tear Jerker

I love watching movies that are made based on books. I always read the book first, before I see any movie. I have to know how it really starts and ends. It is the same way with Broadway shows. I read Wicked before I saw the show, even though the book is NOTHING like the show.

I have stacks of books, and I do mean stacks. There is no organization, but I wouldn't be without them (hubby may argue that fact if he had his way though). I have large selection of books, from Biographies to Sci-Fi and trashy romance novels. I don't care, just give me the books!

Many of my books have been made into movies, or televisions shows (Women's Murder Club). At one point I had very single John Grisham book ever made, and had seen every single movie too.

In the past few years, there have been movies based on the books by Nicholas Sparks. This guy has a ton of great books, ones that I really need to get soon. Four of his books have been made into movies, with rumors of a couple more. I have seen two of these movies, and fell in love with one just recently.

I have been wanting to see A Walk to Remember for such a long time. I read the book when it first came out, shortly followed by the movie.

Mandy Moore plays Jamie, a preachers daughter with a life threatening secret. Shane West plays Landon Carter, a high school senior with dreams of being a doctor. They fall in love, as only high school students can, but this is short lived.

The ending of the movie had me in tears. The things Landon does for Jamie are amazing. He even comes back to visit her father 4 years later.

There is some amazing music in the movie too, both in the school play and a remake of a Tiffany song. I have already downloaded the soundtrack, and can't wait to listen to it at work tomorrow.

This movie has replaced The Notebook as my favorite movie based on a Nicholas Sparks movie. If they made a movie based on The Wedding that would trump them all though.

Next up, when it comes out on video...Twilight. I.Can't.Wait! I have read all the books, and am ready for this one.
