Proud Mama

Last week I got the best compliment a mother can ever get.

"Your child was big help to my daughter, she defended her to a mean kid".

When Boo heard her friend being picked on, she stepped up. She told the other girl (yes it was another little 6 year old) "Don't talk to my friends like that!".

This little girl went home, told her mom and I got a phone call with gratitude.

Could I be any prouder?

We have spent the last (almost) 9 years teaching both the kids that everyone is equal, that everyone has feelings and that we treat people, ALL PEOPLE, with respect.

Boo has seen what Hunter has gone through, and takes it to heart when her friends are hurting. And lately, that seems to be a lot more.

Why do kids feel the need to belittle and hurt one another in FIRST GRADE! I don't get it. When I was in first grade there were groups of kids that weren't very nice, but it was never "gang up on one kid" type stuff.

I can only hope that Boo and Hunter continue on the road they are on. I hope that my kids keep showing their friends that everyone has the right to be happy at school. I wish this for every child.

I can see why you are so proud! I wish more parents would take the time to teach their kids this all-too-important lesson.

Way to go Boo! Its so great when we see that all of our relentless teaching finally kicks in without us there to help!

Yeah, Boo! What a sweetheart she is! And Kudos to the parents as well! Kiki has been having problems with 3 girls in her 2nd grade class. Although she seems to handle it well (she just goes off and plays with other kids) I lost sleep over it. The thought of kids being mean to my baby upsets me.
Kids can be mean and we need more Boos in the world to put them in their place!

Your daughter ROCKS! That is awesome. I try to instill that in my kids too.

Children can be so mean!

Yay, Boo!!!!! Oh man...as a former first grade teacher I can DEFINITELY say that the cattiness and the bullying really start that year. It's their first year as "grown up students," and readers and writers, and it's a really exciting time (and my absolute FAVORITE age group to teach!!). BUT....they also start to act more grown up socially, and this new growth can manifest itself in some surprising ways. You've done a great job giving Boo the tools she needs at home!! I'm very proud of her :)

That is so great. I totally agree with you. I constantly tell my children that nobody is better than anybody else and we should be nice to everybody.

I am proud of your daughter too. :)
